At approximately 4:30 PM on November 13, 2019, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Tactical Response Unit was conducting C/S gas familiarization training at the Sheriff’s Office Training Center located at 543 McDow Road in Columbiana. This type of training is a common method of exposing law enforcement personnel to the effects of C/S gas for a short period of time. After the training was completed, the room in which the gas was deployed was vented externally. Unfortunately, after the C/S gas was vented, several employees and visitors of the nearby Shelby County Humane Society were possibly exposed and experienced respiratory issues. Although four people were taken to local hospitals to be treated, none of the injuries appear to be serious at this time. C/S gas is considered safe and the normal reaction to exposure is an irritation that is treated by moving the exposed person to an area that has no gas in it. The Sheriff’s Office believes the community is not in any danger and that this is an isolated incident.
