On 11/25/2019 at approximately 12:00 PM, the Shelby County 911 Center received a call about a possible shooting in the area of the 100 Block of Nelson Circle in unincorporated Shelby County, near the City of Montevallo. Deputies responded to the area and discovered Derius Marquis Fields ,24 years old of Montevallo, deceased from multiple gunshot wounds. A crime scene was established in the area and our Criminal Investigations Division arrived to conduct their investigation.
Through the investigation, it is believed that Derious Garner and Derius Fields were in an altercation that escalated to gunfire, and Derious Garner shot Derius Fields resulting in his death. Another person at the scene, who legally possessed a firearm and valid pistol permit, exchanged gunfire with Derious Garner and wounded him. Garner fled the scene and was later found in need of medical treatment. Garner was then transported to the hospital by ambulance.
Derious Derann Garner, 31 years old of Montevallo, has been charged with one count of Murder and one count of Attempted Murder. Garner has also been charged with two counts of Receiving Stolen Property. He is currently being held at the Shelby County Jail on bonds totaling $1,010,000.
Shelby County Sheriff John Samaniego would like to thank the Montevallo Police Department, the Montevallo Fire Department, and the University of Montevallo Police Department for their assistance during this incident and the subsequent investigation.
Sheriff Samaniego stated, “Our hearts are with the friends and family of all of those involved in this tragic incident. This is truly a senseless act that could have been avoided. I encourage everyone to find peaceful ways to resolve their conflicts instead of escalating to violence.”
This is still an ongoing homicide investigation, and more charges may be filed.
