Update on Robbery Investigation

On Friday, April 17, 2020, at approximately 10:30AM, Shelby County Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to a robbery of three individuals inside OrthoExpress Urgent Care at 104 Chelsea Point Drive, in Chelsea. Deputies immediately searched the area for a black male suspect wearing a black hoodie and grey pants. The male suspect was reported to be armed. After a thorough and lengthy search, deputies were unable to locate the suspect.

On April 18th, investigators with the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office identified 32-year-old Derrick Hightower of Columbus, GA as the suspect in the robbery. Hightower was taken into custody after a massive manhunt on Saturday in Birmingham on other cases.  Evidence was located that helped Shelby County Investigators connect Hightower to the robbery in Chelsea. Investigators plan to obtain arrest warrants against Hightower in connection with the robbery.

Sheriff Samaniego stated, “We are very thankful that this individual has been arrested and is no longer a danger to everyone.  Our thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been impacted during this unfortunate series of events. I commend all of the law enforcement agencies who have been working together to bring this to a close.”
